Black Lung by Jason Higgins

Wow, bringing you our featured Copper House Gallery artist of the week, roll of the drums please, new to our stable is the uber talented photographer Jason Higgins!

Born in Dublin, Jason graduated from the University of Ulster at Belfast in 2001 with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communications. He then achieved a Masters of Fine Art in Photograph from the University of Ulster under Paul Seawright, Donovan Wylie and KayLynn Deveney in 2012.

Currently a member of the photographic collective The Belfast Photo Factory, Jason is also director with Belfast Platform for the Arts. 

This body of work, Black Lung, examines the marks left by the forgotten coal-mines of rural Ireland through the use of metaphor and conceptual imagery in order to visually represent the unseen damage and scarring done to the lungs of the miners by the inhalation of coal dust. 

Though-provoking, discordant and melancholic,  Jason Higgins may just be the Radiohead of photography!

[uhn-der-bel-ee] an exhibition by Derry Dillon produced here at Fire!!

Thrilled we are to see that one of our 2011 Illustration at Fire Award finalists  Mr. Derry Dillon will be exhibiting his delightfully idiosyncratic work as part of this years Carlow Arts Festival Éigse!! Carlow Arts Festival Éigse is an annual multi-disciplinary festival in the south east of Ireland showcasing a diverse range of arts and cultural events over 10 days each June.

Produced here at Fire, Derry's exhibition entitled [uhn-der-bel-ee] or Underbelly is a collection of illustrations, prints and sculptures that cast a somewhat skewered eye on the local landscape and runs at Lennons@VISUAL from 7th June to 7th July 2013.

Underbelly lifts the mossy rock on the county’s rich history and peers at the oddities residing beneath. Unveiling a cluster of quirky characters captured in a series of bizarre scenarios, the collection presents dubious historical facts which Dillon uses to describe the residents of Carlow—from gregarious pistol-happy Lords standing astride the River Barrow to B-movie monsters residing on Mount Leinster.

An Enchanted World, brought to you by Phil McDarby

Our featured Copper House Gallery artist this week is the very talented Mr. Phil McDarby. A digital artist and photographer,  Phil's beautiful work is informed by a sense of magic realism. Over a 14-year career he has worked across many visual media, from web design and branding, computer game design, 3D modeling and animation to concept art, matte painting, illustration and photography. Phew! 

Our hard working Phil has also exhibited his work in Amsterdam (2008) and Edinburgh (2009) and he currently works at Brown Bag Films as a matte painter. Into the Greenwood Deep,  Phil McDarby's critically acclaimed exhibition of digital art ran at The Copper House Gallery in April 2012 and he is currently showing a selection of these magical images at Third Space, over in Smithfield Market, Dublin 7.

IMMA at NCH presents This Situation by Tino Sehgal

The showing of This Situation will mark the first occasion for Turner Prize Nominee Tino Sehgal’s work to be seen in Ireland. Sehgal studied both political economics and choreography, working in dance before focusing on his ‘constructed situations’, compositions that draw upon the human voice, language, movement, and interaction without the production of physical objects.

Originally conceived in 2007, This Situation has toured globally with the support of the Goethe-Institut. In this version of This Situation, the gallery space is occupied by a group of six participants or interpreters whose choreographed actions generate a discussion of cultural, economic and philosophical issues. Fluid, transient and compelling, the 'constructed situation' blurs the boundary between performance art, theatre and dance.  

Tino Sehgal’s work exists in time and memory only as his work is not documented in any way. He stipulates that there is no written set of instructions, no written receipt, no catalogue and no pictures, (please refer to excellent article by Adrian Searle).

This Situation is curated by Rachael Thomas, Senior Curator: Head of Exhibitions, IMMA, and co-curated by Georgie Thompson, Assistant Curator: Exhibitions, IMMA, and produced by Louise Hojer. This Situation by Tino Sehgal runs until Sunday 19th May 2013 at, IMMA at NCH (Second Floor), Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2.

I am here, you are there - a new exhibition by artist Kate Byrne

I am here, you are there is a new exhibition of photographic work by artist Kate Byrne. Produced here at Fire, these large-scale portraits of eight women, linked by a lifetime living in the peninsula of Howth, Co. Dublin, explores pre-concieved ideas of ageing and beauty in contemporary western society.

Byrne’s exhibition at Highlanes Gallery reflects and develops on this idea and considers how older women are represented in a visual culture that is dominated by images of youth in television, film, and the media.

Highlanes Gallery is presenting the full body of portraits in a special exhibition programmed to coincide with Bealtaine, the festival for older people and the arts, celebrating creativity and ageing, which takes place annually in May across the Island.

Catherine McGuinness retired Supreme Court Judge and activist officially opens the exhibition on Tuesday 7th  May at 1.00pm.  I am here, you are there, a new exhibition by artist Kate Byrne runs at Highlanes Gallery until 15th June 2013.

The colors of time by Mario Sughi

Our featured Copper House Gallery artist this week is Mario Sughi, aka nerosunero, an Italian artist illustrator living and working in Dublin.

Mario has received countless awards and his work has been included in the Annuals of Italian Illustrators (2010, 201, 2012), American Illustrators (2010), 3x3 Illustration (2010), and Aesthetica Magazine (2010). Selected he was in 2011 by the Venice Biennale for the Italian Pavilion in the World. 

Mario will be exhibiting at Yvonne Arte Contemporanea in Vicenza, Italy, we'll have you know! Pictured up yonder there is Mark Paisley and Sarah Eva Manson busy as elves on the production of Mario's sublime work for the show entitled I colori del tempo (or The colors of time) that will be launched 9th May 2013 at Yvonne Arte Contemporanea. Bravissimo!

Fine Art Photography by Rohan Reilly

We will be running a feature each week on one of our fabulous Copper House Gallery artists, just especially for you! This week, let's hear it for award winning fine art photographer Rohan Reilly.

Based in West Cork, Rohan's spartan work is informed by the rugged land and seascapes of the area. Using long exposures to draw out the essential elements of a scene, his images are enigmatic and compelling, inviting us into a monochromatic world of clean lines and strong shapes.
